The short answer

A paver patio in North Carolina costs $14 to $30 per square foot installed in 2026 with concrete pavers, $20 to $30 with premium large-format pavers, and $25 to $50 with natural stone such as travertine or bluestone. A 16 by 20 foot patio of 320 square feet lands between $4,500 and $9,600 in concrete pavers, and a 20 by 20 patio of 400 square feet between $5,600 and $9,600. The price includes layout, excavation to seven to nine inches, geotextile over the clay, six inches of crushed stone compacted in lifts, one inch of screeded bedding sand, the pavers with wet-saw cuts and a border course, edge restraint spiked every ten inches, and polymeric sand. Curves, inlays and hard access add the most; a seat wall adds $60 to $120 per linear foot and a built-in fire pit $2,500 to $6,000. Small patios price toward the top of the range because the setup is the same as a large one.

What moves the price

The paver

Standard 60 mm concrete pavers in a running bond or herringbone are the baseline. Tumbled, textured or large-format slabs cost more per piece and often more to lay because they are heavier and less forgiving. Porcelain and natural stone move the material line most; travertine also needs a different bedding.

Pattern, curves and borders

A rectangle in running bond has one row of cuts. A circle kit, a curved edge or an inlay compass has hundreds. Cuts are labor, blade wear and waste. A soldier-course border is worth its cost on almost every patio; a second border or an inlay is a taste decision we will price for you plainly.

Access and haul

A 400 square foot patio needs about 6 tons of base stone and 5 tons of pavers. If a skid steer can reach the backyard, that is a morning. If it goes through a 36-inch gate by wheelbarrow, that is a day and it is on the quote.

Drainage and slope

Every patio is pitched a quarter inch per foot away from the house. A yard that slopes toward the house, or a patio against a foundation, may need a channel drain or a French drain. We price it on the visit so you do not find the problem in a storm.

Existing patio

Removing an old concrete patio adds $2 to $8 per square foot. In some cases a sound slab can stay under thin overlay pavers, which saves the excavation and the disposal; we check it on the visit.

Paver patio cost questions

How much does a 20 by 20 paver patio cost in North Carolina?

A 20 by 20 foot patio is 400 square feet. In concrete pavers that is $5,600 to $9,600 installed in North Carolina in 2026; in premium large-format pavers $8,000 to $12,000; in natural stone $10,000 to $20,000. A seat wall, steps or a fire pit are added on top.

Why do pavers cost more than a concrete patio?

More material and more hand labor. A paver patio needs a deeper base, bedding sand, each unit set and compacted, every edge cut with a saw, edge restraint and polymeric sand. What you buy for the difference is a surface that can be repaired one piece at a time and never shows a crack line.

What adds the most to a paver patio price?

Curves and inlays, because every curve is a row of cuts. Then site access, because base stone and pavers arrive by the pallet and someone has to move them. Then the paver itself: a large-format porcelain or a natural stone can double the material line.

Can I put pavers over my existing concrete patio?

Sometimes. A sound, well-drained slab can take thin overlay pavers on a bedding layer, which saves the excavation. A cracked, heaved or poorly pitched slab cannot, because pavers follow whatever is under them. We look before we recommend it.

How much does a seat wall or fire pit add?

A matching block seat wall runs $60 to $120 per linear foot, capped. A built-in wood-burning fire pit adds $2,500 to $6,000, less when it is built in the same visit as the patio because the base and the cuts are done together.

How long does a paver patio last?

The pavers themselves carry manufacturer lifetime warranties. The patio lasts as long as its base: a six-inch compacted base with edge restraint and topped-up joint sand every three to five years should last decades. A patio on a two-inch base lasts about three summers.
