Empire Stone Group builds concrete driveways, patios and slabs, paver patios and walkways, retaining walls and stone masonry for homeowners and builders across North Carolina. Most of the work is in the Piedmont, from the Charlotte metro and Lake Norman through Iredell County to the Triangle and the Triad, and we take projects further into the foothills and toward the coast when the job warrants the drive. The ground shapes how we build here: red Piedmont clay swells when wet and shrinks when dry, which is why every slab sits on compacted stone with a fabric separator, why we lean toward pavers for patios, and why every retaining wall gets a drain pipe and clean stone behind it. Winter freeze-thaw cycles are why all exterior concrete is 3,500 to 4,000 PSI air-entrained. Piedmont clay
Most of the state between the mountains and the coastal plain sits on red clay that swells when wet and shrinks when dry. It moves whatever sits on it. That is why our slabs sit on compacted stone with a fabric separator, why we lean toward pavers for patios, and why every retaining wall gets a drain pipe and clean stone behind it.
Freeze and thaw
The Piedmont gets enough freezing nights each winter to scale a slab that was poured with the wrong mix. All of our exterior concrete is air-entrained, 3,500 to 4,000 PSI, and sealed where the finish calls for it.
Slopes and lots
Newer subdivisions in the Charlotte and Raleigh suburbs are graded steep to drain, which leaves a lot of backyards unusable without a wall. Terracing with two low walls often avoids engineering and gives you planting beds and a flat lawn.
Permits vary by county
Retaining wall and fire feature rules differ from one county to the next. We check yours before the quote so the number on paper includes what the inspector will ask for.
